For over two centuries, wine has been made in Tohani. A unique terroir, people who have known and loved the vineyard for generations and a passion for wine have marked the history of this blessed place. And the last decades have brought bold dreams, tailored achievements and wines worthy of Romania's exceptional potential in this field to the evolution of Tohani.
This is how, in the contemporary era, event wines such as APOGEUM – the wine that earned Tohani the reputation of "home to Feteasca Neagra", or creative wines such as Principele Radu, Siel, Wine Chocolate or Maestro were born in Tohani. The only wine cellar in the area is also preserved here, which houses over 100,000 bottles of collector's wines, the source of future great surprises for wine lovers.
Tohani has a long history, with documents attesting to the existence of the vineyard dating back to 1773. It has always been a place with a special power, influencing destinies and changing the course of history.
The complex consisting of the mansion, the wine cellar and the old cellar once constituted a royal property, which belonged to Prince Nicolae of Romania and his wife, Ioana Doletti Dumitrescu. Prince Nicolae, the fourth child of King Ferdinand and Queen Maria, lived a beautiful love story with Ioana Dumitrescu Doletti, the daughter of Iorgu Dumitrescu of Tohani. The two were married on October 28, 1931, violating the Statute of the Royal House, and the ceremony took place in Tohani. The mansion in Tohani was the place where Prince Nicolae and Ioana Doletti lived the happiest period of their lives.
Since then, all those who have chosen to stop at Tohani – for a while or for life – have known and felt the passion that this place inspires in people. In the Apogeum Winery they keep the original page from the civil status register, where the signatures of the newlyweds appear.
In 1948, the Tohani Estates became state property and in the following years, through an association with specialists from the Bordeaux area, the winery was built, preserved to this day as a place to visit and a museum. Here is preserved the only wine cellar in the area, which houses over 100,000 bottles of collector's wines.
In the 2000s, the company was privatised and underwent an extensive modernisation process. Construction of a new factory with cutting-edge technology, a new infrastructure, replanting of vines on important areas. This is the beginning of the modern period, when the South African oenologist, Albertus Van Der Merwe, joins the Tohani team, bringing a new world air to Tohani, which perfectly complements the tradition and skill of Romanian oenologists.
Tohani is a privileged place, which urges the mind and soul to open up to the creative forces of nature and man. Located in the middle of the Dealu Mare region, Tohani spreads over 7 sunny hills, blessed with a special climate. The hills are oriented to the southeast, receiving the generous caresses of the sun for a longer time. Thus, the grapes enjoy the sun 14 more days per year than other wine-growing areas of the country. Reaching maturity earlier, the berries have more time for qualitative accumulation.
The Tohani vineyard is located on the 45th parallel, like the famous Bordeaux Vineyards. The Mediterranean microclimate, which makes it possible to grow figs and almonds, offers the vines special development conditions, which makes Tohani wines have intense color and aromas, body and organoleptic balance.
The APOGEUM winery, located in the heart of Dealul Mare, is the birthplace of one of the most prestigious wines in Romania. Feteasca Neagra APOGEUM has won multiple gold medals on four continents, ranking in the top 1% of wines worldwide, according to Vivino.
The vine from which APOGEUM is born is over 50 years old and the winemaking method is two millennia old. The wine rests in ceramic amphorae and goes through an elaborate and long process. After two years of maturation in French barrels, APOGEUM reaches the market in limited editions of up to 10,000 bottles.
