About Magura Zamfirei
Our farm stretches with its fields right up to the base of, and all around, the legendary Magura, about which we are sure you have already heard much. Magura is a tell-type settlement, an artificial hill formed by a human habitation abandoned for several centuries. Over time, “our mound” came to be known as Magura Zamfirei, as recent documents from the Calinesti archives show that near this hill there once stood an inn where travellers would stop to rest, owned by “a certain Zamfira.” The still in which Zamfira prepared her spirits has been lost to time but the place where the manor once stood has preserved its magic. Hundreds of years later, we continue Zamfira’s story through our new distillery. The name “Distileria Magura Zamfirei” was chosen in direct connection with the surroundings of the current location.
The distillery has developed a series of stories based on the few pieces of information linked to Zamfira, her inn, and the Magura, so that Magura Zamfirei may become a symbol of Teleorman county and a tourist attraction. Maia Morgenstern (famous Romanian actress) accepted the challenge of bringing to the public’s attention the stories and happenings from Zamfira’s inn, with Zamfira herself as the central character of these tales.
Our aim is to craft original stories with Romanian roots, modernised and associated with our Zamfira. By bringing to light the history of Zamfira and her inn near the Magura, we are giving birth to a local legend, one that inspires national pride and holds the potential for international recognition.
The founder is Alexandru Haita, a farmer for over 15 years. For him, the idea of the distillery was born out of passion and a deep love for agriculture and fine spirits, the desire to do things differently and as we like to believe, the inspiration breathed into him by Zamfira. These are what led Master Distiller Alexandru Haita to establish Distileria Magura Zamfirei.
The distillery has expanded its product portfolio bringing 3 classic gins, 3 matured gins, 1 rye spirits, 1 vodka and 1 rum each with its own innovation, taste and character all of which you can find here, exclusively available to be purchased in the UK through our website.
