Zaganu (Zăganu) is an independent, 100% Romanian microbrewery founded in 2013 by Alexandru and Laurentiu, two young entrepreneurs.
They pride themselves on an annual production of 0.0049 million hectolitres of semi-automatically bottled and labeled craft beer. Production is ensured by a small team of skilled locals from the Maneciu commune, led by their master brewer.
Their microbrewery is located at the foot of Zaganu peak in the Carpathian mountains, near the Cheia resort, in the village of Maneciu-Ungureni, Prahova county. Zaganu, both the mountain and the beer are named after a species of eagle (the bearded eagle), hunted to extinction 100 years ago.
The beer they produce in this micro-brewery is called Zaganu and it is a craft beer, unpasteurised, made only from easy-to-read and pronounce ingredients: water, malt, hops and yeast. No maturing enzymes, maze or compromises.
They started producing the first 2 types of beer in October 2013: a Pilsner-style blonde beer and a Brown Ale-style brown beer, both naturally fermented for a minimum of 21 and 30 days, respectively, then bottled in bottles (0.5L) or barrels (30L), with a shelf life of 45 and 60 days, respectively. This is the reason why Zaganu beer is bottled only on request, depending on the orders received from partners.
Starting in October 2015, with their 2-year anniversary, they launched 2 new, special beers to complete their portfolio: Zaganu India Pale Ale and Zaganu Rosie (Red Belgian Ale). Both are unpasteurised, unfiltered, produced with a top-fermenting yeast and swept for a minimum of 23 days.
In 2016, they launched a new special edition beer, a Pale Ale called Adonis, after the name of the first zagan (eagle) seen in the skies of Romania after over 80 years of its disappearance. In 2021, they have 11 Zaganu craft beers in our portfolio.
In August 2017, they opened their first own bar, called Zaganu Craft Beer Bar, in Bucharest in a historical building built in the 30's where they serve their own beers on tap and other 40 labels from different local fellow craft brewers.
